Okay, here's the one phenomenon that most affected language development and usage in MY lifetime (I'm 33):

"Valley Girl" - starring a very young Nicholas Cage.

Yes, the classic early-eighties movie that introduced the world to such terms as "like", "awesome", and "totally", among others. Not to mention wacky syntax. I think it can easily be argued that this movie influenced a change in the speech patterns of young people, thereby changing the language. People don't really do the "valley girl" thing anymore as a whole (gag me with a spoon, and all that), but these words have successfully been integrated into common speech patterns of most Americans under the age of 33.

Oh, and for the record: It's a TERRIBLE movie! :)

The English language became the English language when many countries came to the New World. Similar words are found in other languages that are in the English language.

Depending on how brief or long you want the paper, you could trace the origin of swear words.

Aside from the F word (which apparently isn't Anglo Saxon - it's Nordic, blame the Vikings) You have-

Blimey (god blind me) Cobblers, and Bollocks (Check the lawsuit against the Sex Pistols- from the 18th C adventures of Reverend Bollocks and his *ss / mule)

Or do you want American references? Like the slang term for Nigerian slaves?
