His party was the Conservatives. The only source of confusion on this is that in principal his first government after Confederation in 1867 was a continuation of the pre-Confederation Liberal-Conservative coalition. The best biography on line is from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography:

Conservative. There is an excellent biography, with pictures, on the website of CBC.ca. It is far better that the biography in Wikepedia, which does not seem to mention his party. You could also try entering his name into Google, to see if there are any other useful sites
