I have African cichlids and I was having trouble with my powder blue killing new fish. I went and bought a Ruby cichlid about the same size and he has been the only new fish to live. Cichlids are very territorial. Try buying a few large lava rocks and move them around every month or so. That way they can't get used to a certain territory and get too protective of it. It's worked wonders for me.

That would be a good idea. I will tell you what, pink covicts are solid. They can hold their own against fish twice their size, they would be a good pick too.
