I design websites, very small scale, not making enough money to report to file taxes on, but I want to expand and make enough money to support myself. I know this means I'll have to start filing taxes, but do I need a business license if I want to continue doing this?

1) I don't run websites, I design them for companies. Got a company needing a website, email me.

2) I'm currently residing in North Carolina, I know laws differ from state to state.

I'd basically be hired by each company so I don't need to be my own company, right?

Not sure about N. Carolina but S. Carolina requires a business license for each local you work in. If you were working in Columbia a business license is necessary, if you get a job in Summerville and have to drive to Summerville, the city (Summerville) would require you to have a license for their city.

Usually (the real world), most business entrepreneurs get one license only. The enforcement by individual cities is not very strict. In all honesty, it's about paying taxes for the money you receive.

Good Luck

One of the answers is correct, if you are going to resell, you will need a federal ID number. There easy to get!

No, I was an independent contractor for years in the state of Ca. and just used my social security number.

I would get one and a Tax number so you do not have to pay sales tax on what you purchase for your buisness.
