He was talking that his love of his life of 20 years was dying of cancer. She died 2 days before he made it to the audition. He dedicated a special song to her.

That man Sherman had started a petition with his wife who had cancer to let him try out for American Idol. Just 2 days before he was to audition she died. Sherman went in and told the judges this story. Paula cried and then she and Olivia hugged him after the audition and Simon and Randy shook his hand.

His "lady" of 20 years passed away from cancer. She passed away 2 days before the audition. He was getting petitions signed so he could compete (as he was slightly over the 28 year old limit) every day he would show her the new signatures he got and it would make her smile. She was proud of him and wanted him to do this.
I cried too.

The love of his live of 20 years was diagnosed with cancer. As a way to keep her spirits up, he started a petition to allow him to be on AI. Just a fun, light hearted thing he was doing to keep her smiling. Well, she passed away 2 days before the audition so the show let him see it through. Very sweet of the producers to to that, it certainly seemed to help him with his grief.

His wife died of cancer days before the audition. He gave his story and got to sing there even though he was way too old to audition. It was sort of a special pass for him because of what he went through.

He had hundreds of people sign a petition because he use to sing to his lady of 20 years and she told him he should be on American Idol. well, he went and sang, and Paula and all of America cried. Very touching
