What exactly is the project?--Do you need information, or video footage?
Ed Gein, Dahmer, Gacy, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer, Monster (especially), Evilenko, The Boston Strangler, Speck, Summer of Sam, Bundy, From Hell, or anything else you might find at Blockbuster is not an accurate portrayal. It's difficult to find a movie about serial killers that isn't misleading or over fictionalized. Check your local library for a documentary.
A&E's Serial Killers-Profiling the Criminal Mind is a documentary about Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and Charles Manson. It's very informative, but I'm not sure if Blockbuster would have it. It is available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Serial-Killers-2-pack-Collector-Choice/dp/B000050HEP

A and E did a great film in 2005 and 2006 about the green
river killer. The Fbi agent who investigated the slaying enlists
the help of captured serial killer Ted Bundy. To see actor
Cary Elways calmy lays out the warped mind of serial killer
and the demonic pleasure of the taking of a human life.
Bruce Greenwood does an excellent job as the F.B.I. investigator
who has had it with facing the worst in humanity and himself.
To see Greenwood's character face to face with the
worst that mankind has to render is chilling.
The investigator with Bundy assistance captures the
Green River killer, and the investigator discovers how fragile and precious life truly is.

Movies "based" on serial killers are usually a combination of people or they are embellished a bit. Both Psycho and Silence of the Lambs (original) are based on Ed Gein primarily, but they are a good example of both problems. A good movie you might want to check out is Copy Cat with Sigorney Weaver and Helen Hunt. It is not based on a real case, but the killer "copy cats" several famous killers. The info they give in the movie about the real serial killers is absolutely accurate, and it's not gross at all, I promise!

I definitely prefer the psychological, intelligent thrillers. I do like the classic slashers (Halloween, TCM, not so much Friday the 13th), but nowadays the ideas are so lame and recycled. My favorite intelligent thriller movie has to be Silence of the Lambs. Ah, yes. Spacey is one of my favorite actors and he was great as a serial killer. Seven was a great movie overall too.

You could try the story of John Wayne Gasey...He was i killer of young men in total i believe that he killed 33. The film stars Brian Dennehey and is a non gory type of film.....I think he would do fine for a project...The film tells the story of how he killed, why he killed and how he was caught...Hope this helps....You could go to a site that deals with true crimes and see if any other have been portrayed in films.....Bonnie and clyde would be another...

Mark Harmon starred in a movie about the life of Ted Bundy and it was very accurate. It was a made for TV movie but I think that there is another movie about Ted Bundy that is available. Now the one with Mark Harmon was not too gross I'm not too sure about the other one.

The life & times of Jeffrey Dahmer, Christian Slater plays him in the movie. There is a scene in the movie when Jeffrey has his parents over for dinner. Jeffrey's dad says to Jeffrey; I don't like your friend too much! Can you please pass the vegtables? It is pretty good movie.
Lastly, one person asnwered; The Texas Chainsaw Murders. It is based very, very loosely on Ed Gehn. Not sure if I am spelling his last name correctly. His man did make furniture and other oddities from the bones of his victims for almost 20 years.
