Snakes. Even now (I'm 31) I cannot stand to even watch them on TV. I used to have terrible dreams about my bed being covered in them. Yukkk.

Dark unknown places. Specifically, the basement.

I was a latch-key growing up and when I would come home from school when I was around 6-7 I sometimes I had to sneak in through a basement window. I remember I would get in and then as soon as I turned around I would sprint as fast as I could through the room and up the stares, never looking back. I always thought there were people in the other rooms I passed and sometimes thought I heard voices.

Three things came to mind straight away as I read your question.

When I was small, not sure how old, I had various visits to my Grandparents, they were totally sweet, not at all scary, just sometimes they would take me on little excursions , these
(altho they were done with the very best of intentions )
scared the begeebers out of me...
The first and most horrific was when they took me & little brother to the local park on a Friday night.
The reason being ,, every Friday night , a fountain that ran normally, all thru the week, would ,,,,,of a Friday night,,, as a special treat(I suppose!!) after lights were out,,, at a certain time of night,,,,,turn on these coloured lights, then simultaneously blast all spectators with huge music, coming from,,, I don't know where!,,,My impressions as a,I think 5 yr old, were grim,I freaked!!I had to be taken back to the car....
2nd scary thing, same grammy's (they only wanted to show us interesting things) ,,,they lived quite close to a rather notable Harbour. They only wanted to take us to to see the Japanese shipping boats but on our approach,,(again I was pretty little) all I could take in, was these massive, looming never-ending steel Goliaths(Japanese fishing boats)... I never could get to look up to the top,,(they were huge!!.... I looked u& up& up...In the end, I just couldn't.... So with tears in my eyes, again I had to go back to the car. We tried this venture a couple of times, I was always willing, till I got there,,, I failed every time.
Third really scary thing, freaky windy days, once, when I was a little older but not much,,, there was this most gorgeous day, warm, mild,,,,still. I was simply puttering about by myself, (we lived on a lovely farm then, out of nowhere, a mini whirlwind raised itself (I don't know how else to describe it) right before my very eyes. In my memory, it cannot have been bigger than four feet or there abouts, all it did was silently make itself visual, whirl for a moment and more I can't really say,,,,gone it was!!...i was at the time stunned, couldn't react, only later, when I had time to think about it,,, then a little bit eerie. At the time, I didn't think to tell anyone else about it,,, it's only now, that I get a shiver up my back, thinking back on it.
Matter of fact, there are a few more stories,,,once I get them sorted, I might even post them here,,,I'm enjoying this,,Q&A'S are bringing things to the fore, that I havn't thought about in ages,,, I like it!!!!
Oh,,,,did I mention the boogey men that lived under my bed, trying to grab my feet when I was trying to get into bed????

Such a sooky baby...

It was our dark and shadowy basement that I had to hang clothes to dry in all the time. My father was too cheap to run the dryer for some reason. That was always the scariest 15 minutes of my day.

However now, I prefer the darkness and basements are interesting.

Burgulars, fires and the boogey man.

I took everything I had that meant something to me to school to aviod the burgulars and fires.
At night I would wrap my head in the blanket and make sure no flesh showed at all to avoid the boogey man.

Thank goodness I grew out of fear!

Cliff was a bit scary too. Seriously though - I was scared of angels.
