Sony is known for quality and being pricey.
I have a Compaq laptop, and I love it, and have not had any problems yet, having it for 8-9 months. I would highly reccommend a Compaq/HP.

hahahaha....
let's just say computers are NOT investments.... they're the worst kind of investment you can make ok... You buy one and a year later you're lucky if you can sell it for a quarter of what you paid for it. That don't sound to me like an investment.
Computers are not really a brand thing. There are lots of good computers out there, and you can even build your own by putting the best parts together. If you want to buy one, I would say probably Dell would be a good bet. I have an HP and it has been a good computer, but I've put together computers before and they were just as good and some better.

As mentoined above, computers aren't an investment. Hopefully, they are a deduction where you live (maintaining records).
If you know what you are doing, you can build one fairly cheaply. Especially if all you want is investment tracking. However, you will probably want to hand over the extra cash for a brand name PC, and get a WARRANTY.
For desktops, rather than laptops, I would consider HP, Dell, and Apple in a pinch.
To ward of howl of protest from Apple people, I say "in a pinch" because the latest advertising from Apple is pushing their laptops at the expense of desktop models.

Also..no problems with my Dell...but I think you're better off standing right in a Best Buy or Circuit City ( even Costco/ Wal Mart)....and looking more into what you're going to use it for, what programs come with it...look for a deal!...the machines are all pretty similar..look at the "extras" you get for your money..(and maybe even service? and warranty?
