Yes rubber balls will ruin your bat. But others have been saying that you can "wear" out a bat its not true unless you put a dent in it. I have a the new Easton COMP and an old Louisville Slugger and I hit just as good with the Louisville as the Easton. Though a wood bat is good for batting cages. Just dont hit the ball where the engraving is.

You want to take care of that bat, and it will take care of you. I played baseball from age 5 until 23... You should treat that bat like its your girlfriend... I know that sounds corny, but first of all its expensive, second of all I was always very superstitious, and I always believed that if I took care of my bat, it would take care of me... Ok enough about that stuff
I would recommend that you buy a wooden bat to use in the cage. The wooden bat will probably cost you 20-50 bucks, but its necessary I think for all baseball players at least at the High School level. It will increase your bat speed, and it will also teach you where to hit the ball on your bat. (to far in on the hands, and it stings, to far out on the barrel it will sting even worse) If you learn to hit right with it (by that I mean label up facing the sky, or facing the ground, the wooden bat should last you a while) The reason behind hitting with the label up or down is irrelevant, but it all has to do with the wood grain...
Bottom line is that even with a protective covering on the bat, it can still ding it up pretty good... No need to risk it, just get a wooden bat, and you will be killing 2 birds with one stone... Better bat speed, and saving your expensive bat...
Best of luck, you can get wooden bats in just about any sporting goods store, but I would suggest getting one from a magazine, it will probably be cheaper...

Kiss it goodby!!! Have you ever seen those dented up black marked bats they use in little league? Rubber balls are the evil ones that cause that.

YES!! Even when you are just hitting regular baseballs, the aluminum bats (even the really expensive ones) eventually lose that "pop" that they have when you first buy them.

i thought that with a wooden bat you always wanted the label to be facing back by the time you make contact with the ball......
