If you go about your existence thinking that the only thing you know is that you are and that you have a soul, then why, when you walk around and live, should you think that the universe of humans is more significant or relevant to you than, say, a tree, or a rock?

I've been wondering this. what makes running around with the people so much better than rolling around in the grass? you can have an effect on them and they can have an effect on you, if that's even important in the first place.

I've really been wrestling over this in my head, since on the one side, I know that the obvious answer is that yes, being with humans is the way to go. but on the other hand, I can't find a reason to pay less attention to nature/etc than people.

Good question.

I don't think people should focus solely on people, nor solely on anything else. Being involved in the human community is a part of being involved with the global community, which includes all living things. Abandoning your fellow humans can make you feel isolated in a sea of strangers. But refusing to understand the rest of the natural world leads to the destruction of this world, the evidence of which you see on any news show on any night of the week.

There are people who say it's impossible to communicate with rocks and trees. And then there are people who say they do it all the time. Either Group A is making grand assumptions or Group B is crazy. But what if Group A has just never come upon the method? It's easy enough to say a thing is not possible when you don't know how to accomplish it.

And anyone who says animals are incapable of love are mistaken indeed. Any good pet owner will have evidence against that.

Yes, you can also pay attention to nature, why not.
As long as you treat your fellow men good and do not harm them.

What you do for another person, you actually do only for yourself in the end. As what you give out comes back to you, always.

If you start to ignore other people, you will wonder how other people will start to ignore you. So find a balance.

If you feel attracted to nature, then concentrate on nature. If this is more relevant to you, this is okay.
Just make sure that what you wish for in your life is exactly what you want in the future. If you want to have friends and people around you, then grow your friendships and relationships or you will be pretty lonely.

An individual should pay all of his attention to being close to his own nature. And that often requires being close to what we actually call nature, such as trees, rocks, and grass; so, there is no point of fighting it. The nature just is; it's in harmony with what made it; it is one with the laws of its creation. There is nothing that can obstructs that onenesss, no conditions, no prejudices, no mind. So, observing the nature helps you get a sense of the laws and mechanisms by which we all are created and operate; it reminds you of a bigger design part of which we all are. This is the effect it has on you. Don’t feel guilty about wanting to be close to nature. When we are close to nature we get realigned, retuned; our batteries get recharged, so to speak. Simply adjust your time spent in nature according to your soul's needs. Don't forget, though, that we can't always stay on charger, be isolated and live in our dream world. We came here to do certain work; we have a purpose here. It’s just like you need to charge your cell phone battery for a certain reason--so that it can work and fulfill its purpose. But the cell phones are not created to be kept on charger all the time.
We also must charge ourselves to be able to carry on and do our work in this world around people; we must fulfill our purpose, and part of it is helping others to get closer to their nature. So, it is not a matter of comparison, if it's better to give more attention to people or nature. It's all part of one in the end. But with people there are things that obstruct your sense of oneness. So, you should be alert and able to be around people and not lose a sense of your true nature. And it can be very challenging, since society often goes by the rules that are not in harmony with the natural laws. If we get pulled into human logic too deeply, it may interfere with (stand in a way of) our contact with our true nature. So, the main objective is to:
a) NOT allow the rules of society run over the rules and laws of nature; b) as much as possible contribute to aligning the social beliefs and world structure according to the needs of our real essence or soul.

Rocks cannot care for you. The grass cannot converse. Trees are incapable of understanding you or your soul. They cannot reach out to you. Above all, they cannot love.

You may argue that people can hurt you, but that is also true of nature. A blizzard. A hurricane. An earthquake. A venemous spider or snake. An avalanche. A heart attack. Nature can kill. But at least a person, the right person, can love you.

Fact is, whether or not a person wants to accept it or not, people are generally social. They need each other to survive. Even if you lock yourself up in your house, someone has to build that house. Someone has to grow your food. Someone has to generate the electricity to power your home. You can run into the woods and avoid mankind, but that is a lot of work. Very few people would be willing to give up their civilized lives to do it.

So the answer to your question: why should an individual pay so much attention to society and other humans? Love. Understanding. Attention. Survival.

ooo. Good question. Sorry I don't have answer but a thumbs up just isint good enough on this one...

I wonder about that sometimes myself too. Maybe because the way we've been conditioned all our lives for milleniums. Language also plays a major role, we only know of the SURE way to communicate with humans but with nature there is no language other than how you feel connected to mother nature.

For your society, you are a citizen of it and without citizen participation society would perish. For other humans, "No man is an Island!". Without the give and take of life with other humans all of us would soon loose the essential evidence we matter.

I think the purpose of life is to gain proof from our environment that we matter, we belong, we are loved. Nature is an essential part of our environment but it does not do a good job of telling you you matter. It is vital to good mental health that we love others and accept their love in return.

The give and take of human love is important! Peace!
