Click on the yahoo mail link at the top of the page and sign up for a free email account.
FYI..... your internet provider most likely also provides you email accounts as well.

It doesn't sound stupid at all.
Go to www.hotmail.com and make an account with them. There will be instructions to help you to do this. When you have done that you will have an email address you have created plus a password you also created to access it with.
Now all you have to is to log on www.hotmail.com and type in your address and [password and it will bring up your email. From here you can send emails or read ones that are sent to you.
You can make free email accounts with alot of websites.
For example you could also try www.yahoo.com and clicking on mail.

simply go to a free email site such as hotmail and create a new accunt, log in and click create new mail, there you type the recepiends email address i.e someone@hotmail.com type your message and click send, its that easy :)

How did you email before you go this computer? What was after the @ in your address?
