They are just talking about starting solids at 6 months, which is technically the beginning of weaning.
They suggest not starting solids until 6 months because babies digestive systems are not ready for them until then. Feeding them solids before that increases the risks of allergies to different foods, constipation, diarrhea, etc.

In raising babies there are no rules, but based on parent's personal opinions, studies that have been done, and normally the child's pediatrician's opinion, there are different things that parents decide to do. Some children have nothing but breastmilk until 6 months, some start on juice as early as 2 or 3 months, some start on food at 4 or 6 months, some breastfeed only until they are 6 months, or less, others until they are a year or 3... or 4. It's all in the parent's personal decisions.

It's not a rule. Some moms breastfeed till their children are 2...
The new idea of breastfeeding at least until they're 6 months has to do with the passive immunity to disease and the nutrition involved in breastfeeding. Breastmilk is best for babies, naturally, but by 6 months, they're also eating baby food and some table food, so the nutritional aspect of nursing goes down because they're getting a wider variety of foods. Also, babies who are breastfed acquire their mothers' passive immunities to some childhood diseases (you can talk to your pediatrician about this), but they've received all of that benefit by about 6 months (that's not to say they're apt to get sick if you wean at 6 months, just that they've acquired all of the benefit they're going to by that time).

Anywhere from 4-6 months; every baby developes differently. Some are not ready for food until 6 months. Babies still need breast milk or formula until 1 year.

They did a study and found out it was best if babies started solids at 6 months instead of 4 months.
Same as they did a study and now you have to put a baby to sleep on its back.
