I don't know if I would. I've never owned a business and I'm not much of a risk taker in that area, but I certainly believe that you deserve a chance. Heck, even you might be more productive than a person like me who has just gotten lazy and unmotivated.
I think I would get to know the person first before I would hire them. I have a friend who was an alcoholic and now you would never know how messed up he was. So I believe that there are people who truly turn around and they deserve a chance.
In the medical field I think you can make it because there is a need for people. In my field there's so much competition thanks to outsourcing that even people with perfect records have a hard time finding jobs that pay halfway decent.
I wish you the best.

You can get hired but it will be more of a challenge. Many companies are now doing background checks especially in caretaker fields. Even if you were to start your own business some folks may not work with you unless you're bonded.

Yes but you will have to work really hard to prove to others that you have turned your life around. Being open and honest with them right away instead of trying to hide is best. Letting them know what you have done with your life to change it is also a good idea. If you keep getting doors closed in your face, then you might want to try home business ideas.

I've been working on my "real-world" business for a while, and I think I've found a secondary income online. I've tried all sorts of things, pay to surf (and I got spyware), read email (for $.01 each), do surveys (and not fit the criteria for 90% of them), enter multi-level marketing schemes (and get sick of it in days).
I've been reading about this company called AGLOCO, which stands for A GLObal COmpany. Its following a business model which was succesful before with a company called AllAdvantage. AllAdvantage payed its members $100,000,000 (one hundred million) in two years from 1999-2001. However, it became a victim of the .com bust in 2001.
Now that everything has stabilized, and we've entered "Web 2.0", this will work again. I'd sign up quickly, because its still fairly new, but has already gotten over one million members since starting in late november 2006.
Here's the site's link.

A decent employeer will be interested in what you were convicted of rather than that you were convicted. Unfortunately, most people aren't decent. They'd just as soon have you removed forcibly than listen to you explain that in your youth you smoked pot or whatever other victimless crime you may have committed and got in trouble for.
