I don't really lean towards any answer. DO you have to have a predisposition for being anorexic or can they motivate you to become anorexic without any predisposition or history of it?

I am a recovering anorexic and I have to tell you, I've been fighting this for about 20 years (I'm 33) but my grandmother, aunt, and mother all had some form of eating disorder. Personally I think it is a combination of genetics and learned behavior that led me here. I am regaining weight after being 110 lbs (I'm almost 6 feet tall) the smallest I had been since age 24. I was taught all my life that even being a little overweight was the most awful thing on earth, so you can see how I look at food. There are people like me that CLEARLY have a problem. I wish my anorexia WERE just a passing fad.

Wow, this is actually a GOOD question. I didn't even know that people were starting to coin anorexia as a lifestyle. They obviously don't have the information and education about the disorder or maybe they just don't care, The horrible, irreversible damages that come along with this disorder are incredible and completely dibilating. I agree with you about the the pro groups. But, this is America and that comes along with freedom of speech and first amendment rights. In a way its bittersweet, because as easily as can write against they can write for it.

Most Anorexics feel a need to belong, and so do everyday people. If someone sees a site where a group of people embrace each-others problems no matter how dangerous, and are a close nit group. They could be sucked into it. Like a friend of mine who is a recovering bulimic said "Anyone who visits these sites are crazy, and need psychological help." A lot of Bulimics, and Anorexics can't understand why someone would/could be so happy to be Ana/Mia. I can't either. Most Bulimics/Anorexics find their lifestyle to be pure hell.

Yes, if you have a predisposition to body image disorders or obsessional behaviour, then this can trigger off an eating disorder.

Obviously if you are just looking out of curiosity and are not prone to these kind of disorders, then it is doubtful it will be harmful, but why would anyone be curious to look at such disturbing sites?

HTH : )

Anorexia is a psychological disorder...

HOWEVER

one can start with disordered eating patterns and develop the disorder... hence why Pro-Ana websites do nothing good... it neither helps those who are pre-morbid or those who are battling the disease.
