To belt, you first have to understand the difference between your head voice and chest voice. Belting involves singing higher in chest voice than you normally would. It can give you more volume and power, but can also strain your voice if you don't do it properly. Some people are naturally good at belting (Barbra Streisand, Linda Eder) while others try develop strength and similar tone in their low head voice so they can move from chest to head in a very connected way. There are lots of good websites out there that give advice on chest vs. head voice and belting. Try doing a search for the phrase "speech level singing" and you'll turn up some useful info. Hope this helps.

You have to sing really loud. But you have to be careful to do it properly, or else you could hurt yourself and even lose your voice. You have to sing from your stomach, not from your throat. All the strength of your voice should come from your insides, from your diaphragm. You also have to regulate your breathing. Jennifer Hudson in "Dreamgirls" outstandingly belts out "You're gonna love me". You should go see it, that way you can have a more visual and auditory reference of belting.
