why when a filipino person has a spanish last name....white, black, and mexican folks asks them "Are you mexican?", "Are you hispanic?"."Why you got chinky eyes but a mexican last name?"
People are so ignorant.

I especially don't like it when a white, black, mexican person confuses an asian person a different asian background like "Are you vietnamese?" "Are you jap?" "Are you chinese?"
It offensive and annoying. If they want to know someone's ethnic background, they should ask "Can I ask you what your ethnicity is?"

get used to it if you are living here in America. The majority is ignorant about other cultures, especially in the midwest, or down south in the backwoods of georgia

conversely, many chinese unfamiliar with western facial features have trouble discerning between them.

It's just a question of exposure I guess; before I worked at a taiwanese and later a japanese company I had trouble myself. You need some time to pick up on these little genetic markers or something.

Of course, assuming is always rude. 'Where are you from' might be direct but "Can I ask you what your ethnicity is?" seems a bit of a long way round.

Yes you are 100% right.
Some American natives from north, central and south America look oriental because there is where their ancestor came from, but luckily in the future we will all mix again and we will all look very much alike each other a little brown a little chinky, perfect world!

they don't make very educated guesses. Just like sometimes we Filipinos can't tell the difference between Polish people and Swedish people.
