I got replacement knobs for my Gibson but I need to know the proper way to take the existing ones off. Can I just pull them off or do I twist it off? I don't want to damage anything.

They pull off. You sometimes have to put a piece of carboard under them to protect the finish and use something to pry a little at a time. Pry then turn and pry until you feel it loosen evenly. Take your time. Some will not pull off very easily. If this is a real old SG make sure you keep the old knobs. Never take off original stuff that is on a collectible and replace the items with some cheesy replacement even if it is Gibson brand. Gibson has all their hardware made elsewhere cheap these days. Just make sure you save the original stuff in case you sell it someday. Label them in whatever you put them in because you may forget what they come off of. I am speaking from experience. I am a luthier and a collector and after a while you forget what came off what.

If there is no set screw on the side, then they just pop off. Get something flat underneath them and pull them straight out. Try to have something that will pull all sides evenly.

You don't want to pull them ********. Like, don't stick a screwdriver under one side and lift up just on that one side.

Not sure, but for my Fender P-Bass, I just have to pull on it.
