This is a fairly scientific answer. Male baldness is occasionally linked to a substance call 5alpha DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). This is basically a more potent form of Testosterone, and causes hair loss. 5aDHT, is a physiological substance in that it is needed in development for the formation of the male external gentalia and the formation of the ductus deferens and epididymis.

In the adult 5aDHT affects the follicle of non-pubescent hair (i.e. the hair on the head) and some how causes the hair to fall out. I dont actually know the specific mechanism for the hair to fall out.

This essentially means that 5aDHT blockers (these are a type of drug) can be used to prevent hair loss. This does not mean that hair will grow back... just that it wont fall out as badly. These are expensive drugs and unfortunately I am unaware of their trade names, a google search will probably tell you. Another drug, is Minoxidil. This is a Potassium Channel agonist, and I have heard (this is by no mean fact) that in a small percentage of people, it can stimulate hair growth. I dont know any possible mechanisms of this action and warn you that this is hearsay. Also bear in mind that Minoxidil can have effects on your blood pressure, and is generally not prescribed because of its many side effects.

I hope this helps!

This information from the article cited below

"Twenty years ago, there were neither specific treatments available for pattern hair loss nor full understanding of the pathophysiology of this common disorder. Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) [or androgenetic alopecia (AGA), male pattern baldness (MPB)] had been clearly recognized as an androgen-dependent hereditary disorder since the 1940s.[1.] The principle of donor dominance was first appreciated at that time and led to the development of hair transplantation as a form of treatment. [2.] However, it was not until recognition of the phenotype of individuals with the genetic deficiency of 5α-reductase (5αR), [3.] the isolation of the two isoforms of 5α-reductase (5αR-1 and 5αR-2), [4. and 5.] along with the documented utility of 5α-reductase inhibitors in male pattern baldness, [6.] that the essential role of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in male pattern hair loss was clearly established.

• Currently, only finasteride 1 mg and minoxidil topical solution (2% and 5%) are FDA-approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
• Both drugs retard further thinning and increase scalp coverage. However, in many patients, the main perceived response may be maintenance of current hair density.
• Neither drug restores all the lost hair. Neither drug is able to reverse total baldness.
• Both drugs require chronic use to maintain effectiveness. If treatment is discontinued, the effects of the drug are lost over several months, and the hair density will evolve into what it would have been without treatment.
• Treatment should be used for 12 months before making a decision about efficacy although benefit may be seen sooner."
