Rewriteable CDs or DVDs cost tenth of the price of a good pendrive.

USB drives are very convenient for file swapping between computers. Since they are plug and play and reuseable, you can plug it into one computer, copy files (quickly, I might add), plug it into the second computer, paste files, voila!

Much more convenient than CDs or DVDs, and totally reuseable.

Depends what you are going to do with the file.

I took a project to a client on a pendrive this week, copied it to his machine, wiped the files and grabbed some more from his machine. I could also change the files while I was there. No need to explore any sort of write-to system, just drag and drop once.

Then it was worth it.
If you are just storing files for future use, a cd is fine.

A re-writable DVD or CD is fine for backing up stuff at home, and that is how I do it. But to take information with me it is easier and safer to use a pendrive- they are more durable and easier to transport. Also it is easier to edit stuff on a pendrive on any available computer while you are away.

It's better to have an external HD for storing data such as pictures etc. The composition of regular CDs deteriorates over time and your data will be lost. CDs are good for the here and now but not for the later!

That's true, but pen drives come standard as 1 or 2Gb, but rewriteable CDs are only 0.75Gb. Plus, a DVD isn't as portable as a pen drive, and you can't keep it on your keyring.
