Correct me if I'm wrong (please do!) but is the yahoo finance "1 yr target est" simply the projected share price this time next year? Are they reliable, and if so it's quite hard to believe because then surely every one would be getting on a good prediction...

Yahoo! do not make the "1yr target estimates", they simply post the estimates of the professional analysts' estimated prices for each issue that has one or more analysts following it.

You should probably read a little more about how the market works before investing your money. Analyst's estimates are not "predictions", they are statistically derived "most-likely outcomes" based on their analysis of how the company(s) are being operated.

Due diligence demands that you do your own research, and make your own judgements; it is a poor analogy, but believing analyst's estimates are "predictions" is a bit like believing that the 'favorite' will always win in any horse race. It just ain't true!

No one can forecast the future for sure

But analysts base their predictions on data from the company.
Of course it depends on the market and the economy.

Be aware that stocks with extremely high analist rating, drop their price if the company does well, but not astoundingly.

I prefer to trade shorter term, its more forecastable
