do you have to take two practicals...at the school and the nationals or just the school

You only need to take one practical. The school administers it for the National Registry as part of your final. You submit that proof to NREMT as your practical for them.

Just to be sure, download the practical skill signoff sheet from NREMT and bring it to your teacher or director before your finals.

what level of emt? the old standards were a state written test and six practicals for emt-basic. now the school takes responbilty to advise the state that you have the knowlegde to fuction as one. emt-i and emt-p is a bit different.

In all honesty, it depends on the state and your individual program. At my school, we had to take a practical and written test just to pass the course, and then we had to take a practical and written test for national certification.

Some states accept National Registry results, and all you have to do is pass your course and take the national registry tests, and then you are done!

Other states do not accept the National Registry results, and you will have to take the individual state's tests. (in those states, National Registry is usually not necessary, but it's a good thing to take just in case you want to work in a different state)

Usually, though, you have to take a practical and written test just to pass your school's course, and then you have to take a state and/or national practical and written test for certification.

Check with your state's EMS Board to be sure...
