I wish my therapist was my mum. Yes - it sounds odd. Has anyone else experienced this? I know that the best thing for me to do is to change to another therapist - but i've only just begun to trust this woman, and starting all over again would be very hard.

STICK WITH IT !!!!!!!!
It`s all part of the therapeutic process. it`s known as :
Transference and countertransference, and you`ll be suprised how the relationship with your therapist will develop and move on !

It is actually not that uncommon for someone to wish they had a different kind of relationship with their therapist (if they like the therapist, of course). Many people often want to become friends with their therapist, so wishing this person was like a family member is not that far of a stretch.

The important thing is that you have acknowledged this feeling and know that you can only have a professional relationship with your therapist. I don't think that it is necessary to change to another therapist, just respect the boundaries of the professional relationship.

If you trust this woman, you should mention this feeling to her. It may prove to be very beneficial for your counseling. Don't be embarrassed, like I said, it's really not that uncommon. The only time it is really necessary to transfer is if you have a sexual attraction for your therapist or you have feelings that interfere with your ability to work on your issues. This is why you should let your therapist know what's going on.

And to respond to the the person who said that therapists don't care and are in it for the money - I admit that there are definitely some bad counselors out there, but there are good and bad professionals in every profession. I will have been in school for eight years this spring when I graduate with my Master's in Mental Health Counseling and the most I can hope to make per year at a community mental health center is about $35,000. That's just about the lowest paid graduate degree there is. I personally am in this job because I care - it's definitely not about the money. I know people with associate's and bachelor's degrees that make more now than I ever will.
Sorry, but I just had to set the record straight.

It's called transference. Seeing your therapist as an object of affection. It's time to find someone else. Personally, I think most therapists are just out for the money. Try not paying your bill and see how much they care.
