I have to fire an employee later today and am still alittle nervous about doing it. I hate to do it but it has not worked out. How can I put this into words? How would you handle this situation?

I am sorry but, there is no real nice way you either fire them or you dont. To be able to fire a person you must be strong and if you cant do it maybe you are not cut out for the job you are doing. Just do it in a respectfull way and give complements, so then the person does not feal discouraged.

I have had to let quite a few people go and unless they stole, it is never easy.
Tell the employee that you're sorry but as it turned out, she's not the right person for the job. ( I hope you gave her warnings, one verbal and two written) If she didn't improve after the review than it will be easier, you can tell her that after all the reviews she did not improve and you have to let her go. Wish her well and tell her you hope she'll find something more suitable for her.

You should just be honest and straightforward. Tell her that you appreciate the positive things that she contributed and list them. And then tell her why is not right for this job and give her specifics. You should also give two weeks severance pay. And if you are comfortable doing so, you can offer to provide a reference for her in the future.

Tell them that you're sorry to have to do it. Tell them THE TRUTH about why you're doing it and hope that they have the decency to take it well.

Whatever you decide to say, DO NOT APOLOGIZE. You speak for the company you work for.
