Based on my experience with Convicts, Id say NO. I used to have a BEAUTIFUL tank full of rocks and plants and other mildly agressive, medium sized 'community' fish and some red devils. One day in the aquarium store te convicts caught my eye. They were BEAUTIFUL and lively and intelligent. Well, the second I dropped them into the other tank, (the ones they didnt eat) they had permanently cornered into the sides of the tank. Including the smaller but more numerous devils.
That was MY experience with the wonderful convicts but remember: Eevery fish is different. So you decide for yourself after you've added them.
Advice: Dont add in a breeding pair. One of the most wonderful things in the world to watch is how loving the extrememly agressive convicts are. They are the BEST fishy parents ive ever witnessed. So much so that if they FEEL another fish/thing from two feet on every side they'll not only swarm, not only attack, but they'll do everything in their power to permanently eliminate that 'predator'.
Painful were the days when I had to clean the glass of the tank. -.-

Attitude wise they would probably work out, but not for water conditions. Convicts prefer it cooler, soften and much lower pH then african cichlids do. Convicts are usually best in a tank by themselves as they are very territorial, but in a fairly large tank (55 gallon+) you can put in a few other types of Central American cichlids. Go for one's that get to a similar size so they can take care of themselves and they would be fine together. The big "trick" is not to crowd them!! Give them plenty of space.

Many african cichlids can't be kept together. It's really going to depend on the exact types of fish.
