I just had an ultrasound and the doctor told me that there was swelling around the baby's neck and abdomen. She said it didn't look normal and I have to have a doppler ultrasound next week. Is there anybody who has been in this situation? Any nurses out there that can tell me what this could be? I am very concerned. Thanks. Only serious answers please.

I'm a nurse and actually was in the same situation as you 4 years ago. My first ultrasound showed Fetal Hydrops or a generalized swelling of the baby. This occurs when there are other problems contributing. I had a level 2 ultrasound and an amnio which were positive for Trisomy 18. My daughter actually died in the womb two days later. That is my experience and I'm not trying to scare you. Lots of things can cause ultrasound pictures to be a little distorted. Wait and see what happens with the next scan. If they detect any abnormalities, ask what specifically they are and then request an amnio. That will give you a diganosis if its a chromosomal or neuro tube defect. I don't know who or where you are, but I remember how scared I felt when I was in your position. I will be thinking of you and hoping every thing works out for you. It'd be great if you could let me know what happens! luvallie2003@yahoo.com

accumulation of fluid under the skin, giving it a puffy appearance. In the fetus, it is often measured in the skin of the neck: the skin fold in the back of the neck (the nuchal fold) is then thickened.
i guess u have to wait and see the result of colour doppler as that will be more accurate diagnosis don't worry everything will be just fine, have faith, goodluck

Sounds like something they would see in Down's Syndrome, but if you had a negative screening for this it's probably something else.
