If you let material objects run your life, you will never be happy. You can work your whole life for the million dollar home complete with the '07 M3 BMW, but soon you will want the 2 million dollar home and the M5 BMW. It is just a vicious cycle.

I guess the easiest way to answer this question is to learn to love what money can't buy; friends, family, health, etc.

It has been proven that even when you make more money, there is still the urge to want more. When you make more, you spend more. Unfortunately, we need to learn to be happy with who and where we are first. Once this lesson is achieved, then we move forward with our lives.

It seems that in today's world most people are unhappy with where they are at. This is due to the great marketing campaigns by companies like Target (currently featuring "you want it/ you need it), Walmart (low, low prices on the good stuff), and Best Buy (Thousands of possibilities) to name a few.

Take the cell phone as one offering. Who convinced us that we really needed a portable phone? Much less one that searches the web, plays music, is a video camera and camera, will play video games, and schedule us. Do we need to be available to everyone 24/7? If so, how did our ancestors ever survive with snail mail & telephone booths?

Personally, I worked hard to get a BS degree and am deeply in debt for it, but I did it (which gives me personal gratification). I go to work every day with people I enjoy. My family and friends get together regularly to play games, watch movies, and celebrate events. While there are things that I want to do with my life, knowing that I make a difference in someone's life is more important than any amount of money. Yeah, I am pretty darn happy where I am. I think you just need to adjust your mindset. It is alot like the thought for the day I received from a friend that puts it all in perspective.
Thought for the day:
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He, then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full they agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full! The students responded with a unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your God, family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions--things that if everything else was lost and only they remained your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car.
The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.
If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18 holes or a game of cards. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal." Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked; It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

So, I'm happy with coffee with friends over loneliness and working my butt of to make six figures any day.

Enjoy this journey 'cause you only take it once.

Well there's my friend little Billy Gates...

Seriously tho, I am totally happy with a minimal salary since I no longer live in poverty and that is good enough for me. Unfortunately, women are so greedy (or needy) that they are not satified with what my income can buy them. That impacts my personal life and forces me to seek more. So yes I would be happy but for the typical woman's biological need to shop. Some of them feel financially happy until the man comes along and their demands come out then.

I don't think anyone will ever be happy financially. Wanting more things in life is just one way of giving people something to strive for. It is simply human nature. We have to keep going, so dreaming of having more money or things gives everyone a goal really. People who have too much money start turning to other things to make them happy. That's when it turns into greed. I agree though, no one is ever happy with what they have.

Yes there are a lot of people who are happy with their current income. They don't go around telling everybody they are happy with their income like the people who are unhappy do. That is what makes it seem as though no one is pleased with what they make. These people (like me) don't always make a lot of money. Material things are far less important to us as than they are to other people. Helping your neighbor is far more rewarding than material things in this life

Nope. I'm a poor college student who's gonna owe thousands after I graduate. I won't be financially stable for quite some time. I don't let that hold me back, though.
