Mexicans technically refer to people born in, or having a citizenship in the land called Mexico. However there are regional differences (such as you may be an American, but you are also a Iowan, an African-American, etc) Thus the Mestizos would be like many americans, of mixed ancestry, but if they were born in this country, or became citizens, they would also be Americans!

Mexico means “moon belly button” in Náhuatl (one the Indian groups in Mexico before the Spaniards came). Some other authors say that it comes from the word “mexica” this is how some Aztecs called themselves to honor their god Huitzilopochtli know also as “mexi” or “mexicali”. So that is why the country is called Mexico and therefore the people from Mexico are Mexicans.

Mexican is anybody from the country of mexico
Mestizo is a mix of white/spanish and natives/maya/atzecs
There are mestizos in guatamala and Peru as well. The ones in my school refer to themselves as mexicans
