It depends on how much you want to spend, and whether or not she already sews. If she doesn't have a sewing machine and doesn't already sew I would get her a simple machine. I just got a Brother for Christmas that was only $150. I didn't really know how to sew and wanted something simple to start. Wal-Mart has them ranging from about $90-$250, all pretty basic sewing machines.
If she already has a basic sewing machine and you are looking to get her an upgrade, I would go to the local sewing shop. Take a picture of the sewing machine she already has with you. I have found that the people at small shops are very helpful and informative.

Here is a link to Consumer Reports and their ratings on sewing machines. If you are not sure on what exactly she wants in a sewing machine, I would take her shopping for one.

Good luck on the hunt!

I applaud you for being such a wonderful husband, hope she appreciates you! There are so many brands of sewing machines, but depending on what you want to spend, you can go to Joanne Fabrics, Hancock Fabrics etc and talk to a salesperson who can offer help; like one other person answered, does she sew already? You can even go to Walmart and get a Singer, Brother etc at a very reasonable price. I spent a lot of money at Sears for mine and while browsing with a friend at Walmart for an inexpensive machine (she was just learning), I found one I'd have preferred to the one I got at Sears. Good luck to you and Happy Anniversary.

As a textile designer i have to use a sewing machine every day and have used many different makes for many different jobs. Bernina is the best. Even the most basic Bernina will last you a lifetime and for general use they are easy to use and because of the way they are built easy to fix if they ever do go wrong. Berninas can often be found second hand quite inexpensively. They are worth their weight in gold in my opinion.
