It will depend on how long it was out of the nest and how cold it got, not on whether you handled it or not, so don't worry about that part. You've done the best you could -- now just stand back and let nature take its course.

Birdgirl has the best answer.
She is correct, a bird will not ignore a chick or an egg because it was touched by a human.

You did the right thing. If you find and egg or a chick, put it somewhere that the parent can get to it. If you know where the nest is, so much the better.

Yes, if the egg was not out of the nest for too long, she could still incubate it and have it hatch. Birds have a very poor sense of smell and will not abandon an egg that has been touched. That is an old wives tale and amazing how many people still actually believe it.

Yes, the mother hummingbird will stilll take care of the egg. Unlike some mammals, birds will not abandon thier young because your scent is on them. Most birds do not have as good a sense of smell as mammals anyway. It is a common misconception that birds abandon their young when they smell a human's scent on them.

It should. It may not want it if you handled it too much, but usually the mother will keep the egg.

LOL ^^^^^^ If ANY human touches ANY bird egg the mother WILL NOT come back to take care of that egg or anything in that nest because it is tainted. Not your fault, you were trying to help, but that bird and any others in the nest will die.

if you left your scent its possible that the mother will abandon her egg but you did the right thing because if you would have left it on the floor the mother would have left it i would've done the same thing.
