I recently purchased an external DVD drive. When I first connected via USB cord to my laptop it functioned correctly and displayed an icon for the drive in "my computer". Now, however, my computer is not displaying an icon for the drive and when I plug it in it is telling me that I have connected a "USB 2.0 mass storage device".

I have already installed all of the necessary drivers. Is there a reason why my DVD drive is not being detected and is there a way I can fix this.

I disconnected the USB cord without using the add/remove hardware icon. Did that damage the software/hardware in some way?

Was the external drive removed without using add/remove device?
Did you pull the pulg on it? Have you had any recent storms or power surges that you know of?

I would uninstall the drive and reinstall it.
Could also be a driver issue.

Good Luck.

check cabling then drivers,...did you have an instal disc with DVD equipment may have to reload.
Last solution go to webpage of manufacturer and see if there is a fix out there or perhaps you can ask that question to the manufacturers. If it worked once then it's not software or wiring must be a use problem or something in the way it is detected with windows. Try powering machine up then connecting USB device up and see what it reads.
