After storms last night. How common is this?

If the balloon did not pop, it is not uncommon for a balloon to travel over 400 miles when released near a storm.

The thunderstorms could have taken the balloon to the top of the storm, which is typically 35,000-45,000 feet. (or even higher!)

That is high enough to be in the jet stream, which usually blows from west to east, but can dip way south and back north again, especially when the conditions are ripe for thunderstorms.

The jet stream will blow easily over 100 miles per hour, so it would take only 4 hours to go 400 miles.

What is uncommon is your DISCOVERING the balloon! Now that is quite a find! Congratulations!!!! :-)

That is really interesting. I wouldn't think it would have gone that far without popping.
