Your donkey could be gay- but Ashley is also a guys name- so I doubt he gathers any sense of how his name is used. Your mare may not be going into heat. And some males will lose interest in their mate as companions if they cannot reproduce. Animals have biological clocks too. So your donkey could be sterile or a gelding or your mare may be no longer to reproduce or maintain a heat cycle.

Your donkey stallion isn't gay - he sees the other stallion as a rival that could be after his mare. If there wasn't a hedge between them he would chase the rival away. That's why he's looking over the hedge at him. Not because he fancies him! If he's ignoring the donkey mare, it's because she's not in season yet and, therefore, not ready to entice him to come anywhere near her.

Animals can be gay.

Your donkey probably is just uninterested in the mare; is she ever in heat? Does she like him at all? Is she mean to him? Donkeys are sensitive, mostly unlike horses. He probably watches the stallion out of curiosity or to make sure it doesn't get too close to his mare.
But, you know, your donkey could be gay. The name doesn't have anything to do with it. Try putting him with a mare in heat and see what he does. Then you'll know for sure. :P

The name has nothing to do with it lol They dont know if its a male or a female name.

He wont do anything unless your mare is in heat or w/e its called for horses or donkeys..Wait until that happens and if he still ignores her than ask a breeder or your vet. Maybe for now he just wants to run in the field with the others...

Animals can be gay but not sure you can tell from what he looks at but more from their sexual interest. There has not been much research into homosexual animals. Much of the work was focused on humans and you can easily correlate. Let me explain.

There are several theories as to why a person is 'born' gay. The most prominent I have read is a work by Simon Le Vay. He determined - through autopsy - that gay men and straight men have one single difference: the size of their hypothalamus (a gland in the middle of your brain and well known to be the source of sexual stimulation in human beings). With gay men it is small and fluffy were as in straight men, it is solid and large. He repeated this experiment with lesbian and straight women and found the reverse. Straight women had small/fluffy gland were as lesbian has large/denser gland.

Following years of studies, he determined that this gland is developed before birth. When he examined pregnant mothers during period of pregnancy he found that this gland gets developed during the 6th month of pregnancy. If the mother body thinks she has a daughter, she would give Oestrogen (female hormone). If she thinks she has male son, she would give Testosterone (male hormone). For some un-explained reason, the mother would give the wrong hormone. Depending on how long this hormone is given, the child may come up as Bisexual, straight acting gay guy, camp gay guy, or in extreme cases transsexual (a person who believes he is in the wrong body!).

In the Animal kingdom, we assume something similar happens. Homosexual animals have been proved to exist in Lions, Zebras, Bulls, Dolphins, Dogs, and many other animal species. I saw a documentary on National Geo graphic called 'Wild Sex', focusing on this and other unexpected trends in the animal kingdom. For instance, gay/lesbian swans are known to mate for life! In another documentary that I also happen to see was shown on TV 4 about two years ago called 'Gay animals', discussed an experiment on a gay bull in Texas. They isolated the bull during the mating season, so as to make the animal desperate for sex. Then they released him to only 10 cows. As much starved and agitated for sex, the bull would only bully the cows but would never mate with them. They even tried to force it to mate, but would not work. Two weeks passed and nothing changed. Then they released another bull hoping the gay bull would learn, and as expected the gay bull would only try to mount the straight bull! Gay animals have been around for many years, but traditionally were only explained these animals are just confused! I feel sorry for your hourse….Maybe a new gay animal dating website needs to be set up! ;0)

I guess that it's possible that any animal can be gay, though I think your donkey is likely to be weighing up a rival stallion. he's probably checking out his rival and wondering if he is likely to take more mares.

He stares at the other stallion as that is his competition. Most stallions will take more notice of another stallion especially when a mare is around.

Yes, animals can definitely be gay just like humans can. Have you ever heard of roy and silo, the gay penguins? Anyway, his name has NOTHING to do with it. But he's probably gay, yes.
