LOL @ Dave. A trojan is a computer malware, and not necessarily, a condom! Check out trojan horse
Anyway, back to your issue, check your system first for malware, Try all the volume tabs to see if there's sound. If there ain't any try plugging in the speaker jacks to another port, else go to the Device Manager to check if your sound card is detected. To do that, right click My Computer, select Properties, then Select the Hardware Tab, then under the Hardware Tab, click on Device Manager.
Under the device manager, select audio devices, then check if your sound card is there, or if it's yellowed out or disable. Right Click the Sound Card, and check it's properties. If it's not installed, get your driver cd and run it. It's auto-run anyway, so you won't have any problems with arcane advanced installation.
If it's yellowed out, click on Driver Roll Back to roll back the device from it's last good installation.
You can also do this, if you're using Windows XP: Reboot your computer, press F8 just right after the check-sum, to invoke the advanced booting sequence. Once there, select Last Known Good Configuration. It will roll back your system to the last good configuration where everything works, (note, this isn't the same as system restore, as this only works for driver roll back.)
After doing those steps, try checking the sounds again. If there's still no sound, try using another set of speakers, or a headphone.
It would definitely work, unless, it's the sound card which got grounded.
To prevent Grounding, use an automatic voltage regulator with surge guard.

It could be a trojan, in which case some anti-virus software should sort it. I recommend AVG anti-virus, as it found, healed & deleted a trojan for me today. The problem could also be in your sound settings. These are found in control panel, audio and video settings. Access these settings and check that mute isn't pressed on any boxes. That could stop your sound settings from working. If you need any more information about this, please contact me via this site and I will try to help you further, if I can.

The last time my sound stopped working I discovered it was nothing at all to do with my computer....and wasn't even the speakers (I suspected they had blown up)....it actually turned out to be the plug to the speakers had gone. (they get quite hot and if you have them plugged in all the time I suppose they are gonna burn out eventually)
I just got a new power/plug (one which you can choose the right voltage so I could set it correct for my speakers)
I've been using that one ever since

Why do you have trojan condoms in your computer? You must be a pervert who rubs many out while on the computer. God Bless!
