Because that's the way they are used to spelling. I know someone who is even proud of being able to abbreviate everything.
And for those of you who are not of the current generation, don't feel like you're just getting old. I am of the current generation and that way of typing irritates me too. I'm not very good at grammar, but anyone can spell well if they take the time to use spell check.

Laziness is just one part of it. I think force of habit contributes to it too, people are so accustomed to using text "shorthand" that it is what they automatically use it, for example, people have handed up essays and exam papers in text shorthand. (At Leaving Cert and college/university level)

To be fair its just a generation thing - they just do it like that nowadays. For the rest of us - well i for one am a crap typist and sorry i dont often spell check, its not like it going on your birth certificate is it - its only email! If we could spell words right we probably wud (OK couldnt resist)! :-)
