"The Catcher in the Rye" is a fantastic book that deals with serious issues revolving around the main character, Holden Caulfield, a teenage boy. It is also...as requested...a not overly long book...it's pacing and subject matter and absolutely absorbing lead, make it seem even shorter. It is one of those books that is hard to let go of when the story is done.

Perfect by Natasha Friend is such a good book!!! I finished it in one day, thats how good it is. Here is a revie from it:
From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9:eghth-grader Isabelle Lee describes her not-so-perfect life. She is dealing with her father's death and her grieving mother by bingeing and purging. On the surface, everything is fine until Isabelle's younger sister catches her in the bathroom making herself throw up. "Eating Disorder and Body Image Therapy Group" is the consequence. Isabelle is amazed when she discovers that the most popular girl in her grade is also at the first session. Through encounters in Group and at school, she begins to realize that all is not fine, even for seemingly perfect people. As the book ends, she is not completely cured but is beginning to learn how to deal with her grief in a more positive way by journaling and talking about her feelings. Friend combines believable characters and real-life situations into a fine novel that addresses common adolescent issues. Teenagers, even reluctant readers, will find the outcome satisfying.–Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SD
Oh yeah its really short too.

I think Go Ask Alice is a great book and it's pretty short. It's definitely about a teen with troubles. It's supposed to be a real girl's diary, but critics are too sure. Here's the link to see the summary/description on Amazon.com:

A good book for girls is called Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging". I found it amusing, easy, and the issues at hand were every bit as relevant now as when I was a teen.
My sons really enjoyed "Girls For Breakfast", which deals with the "guy-side" of teen issues. Also amusing and comfortable to read.

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ is your best bet I think. It's actually written for young teenagers so it's a very, easy quick read and hilarious. Well, it was when I read a couple of decades ago as a teenager!

Check out Pete Hautman's works such as "Sweetblood," "Invisible," or "Godless."
Judy Blume is also always a great choice.
