Hi Skiperdee,
Hope this helps you.
Plus there is a lot more on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edward Gein (August 27, 1906 – July 26, 1984),
was an American serial killer. Though only two murders on his part were confirmed, he gained great infamy due to necrophiliac behavior, which involved the skinning of his murder victims and exhumed corpses, the decoration of his home with parts of corpses, and the creation of articles of clothing from the skin of corpses. Besides the death of his brother in 1944 under mysterious circumstances, six people disappeared from the Wisconsin towns of La Crosse and Plainfield between 1947 and 1957.
Films
Gein was widely believed to be the basis for main character Norman Bates in Robert Bloch's novel Psycho although Bloch later denied this in an interview.
Gein's story was adapted into its own movie called In the Light of the Moon, later to be retitled Ed Gein for the US market. It starred Steve Railsback as Gein and Carrie Snodgress as Augusta.
Leatherface, the homicidal, human skin-wearing villain of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, was also based on Gein.
As of January 2006, Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield, directed by Michael Feifer, is currently in production. It is expected for 2007
Buffalo Bill, the main antagonist in The Silence of the Lambs, was partly modeled after Ed Gein.
The film See No Evil, with WWE superstar Kane, also depicts some of Ed Gein's relationship with his mother.
Gein's crimes are referenced in a number of other movies including House of 1000 Corpses,Maniac and American Psycho..
TV
In Fox's TV series Bones (TV Series), the episode "The Man in the Cell" depicted a deranged serial killer by the name of Howard Epps, who dismembered and mutilated his victims. Epps also had an obsessive and abusive relationship with his mother, who made him bathe in Ammonia to get the scent of all the females he's been with off of him. The type of killing and relationship to his mother is a direct allusion to Gein.

It is important to note, however, that these movies (Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs), were inspired by Ed Gein's behavior and murders, not based on his actual life. They are not historicly accurate, nor were they intended to be. For instance, Ed Gein didn't live in Texas, and he chainsawed his victims after he had strangled them.

There is a documentary on TV about him that I have seen twice.
I heard that The Silence of the Lambs movie was based on his life. Very gruesome. He made things out of peoples skin and robbed new graves as well as killed people, Watch for the show.

I can't go into what he did here...it is honestly too horrific. Please check the info on the links below.
As for movies, he served as inspiration for Psycho's Norman Bates, and The Silence of the Lambs' Buffalo Bill, as well as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
