Oh god I had this SAME problem......for days and days I was trying to get through....so much so I knew all the numbers to press (for what you want to choose from the list) in my head......

I then came up with a plan which ACTUALLY WORKED!.....
This is what I did .....

wait until 7.59 AM....dial the phone number less the last digit....watch the clock, the SECOND it turns to 8am dial the last number then press all the relevant numbers you want to get thru the choices (without waiting to hear the choices)....and VOILA!! I was thru immediately!!

give it a try, it worked for me!

(incidentally....I am no longer with British Gas....found out they were not only USELESS but the most expensive choice for supplying my electricity. I changed to EDF and am now saving between £5 and £10 a WEEK!!!!!!!!!)

There are various ways you can short cut through automated systems

The first thing to try is to press *0 this can take you straight through to an operator.

When it askes you to press 1 for this, 2 for that etc don't press anything and the system thinks you have one of those old rotary phones and puts you through to an operator.

If it is a voice recognition system and askes you to speak mumble or stay silent, again it will put you through to an operator.

If all else fails press the option for finance and you normally get straight through and request they transfer you, dependant on the companies queueing system though this one can back fire as you will be given low priority and put at the end of the queue.

I once tried phoning the complaints dept to complain about waiting times on the general phone line. I was told I would have a wait of twenty minutes to speak to an adviser!
They have also owed me ninety quid for almost two years. They refunded it once - and added it straight back on the same bill.
The best thing to do if you have a serious complaint that they arent addressing is to complain to energywatch. You can do it on line on energywatch's site.

Go to the website *say no too 870.com*, there you will find alternative tele numbers that will bypass the usual queues. I use it all the time, usually they take you direct to customer services.
