A few of these I did read for school, like to Kill a Mockingbird, The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, and Wuthering Heights. I never thought I'd like them until high school when I had to read them and they just grew on me and even in college I still like them.

I read "Jane Eyre" when I was 12. It was my first classic and has remained my most loved. Also loved "Emma" and Dante's "Inferno". Those are some of my favorites. You may also want to try "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers and "Cannery Row" by Steinbeck.
I'm reading "The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins right now. Quite good. Very mysterious.

A lot of good suggestions here already. I would like to add Vanity Fair by William Thackeray. I have been reading Oliver Twist over the past couple of weeks. I read an abridged edition as a child and am now reading it unabridged. I also read David Copperfield many years ago.

you have named some of my favorites as well. Jane Eyre was one of my all time favs. You didn't mention anything by Thomas Hardy. You should read some of his novels. Tess of the D'Urbevilles was the high school standard but The Mayor of Casterbridge as good and so was Jude the obscure.
it is wonderful to know there are others that still enjoy reading the classics as well as popular books.

My favorite classic is Candide by Voltaire.
While I didn't get very far in it, I liked what read of Brideshead Revisited.
I read and enjoyed Exodus by Leon Uris for a history class. I've gone on to read other Uris books - very good author.
I think most of the Mark Twain books are good. I had to read some for school but the one I enjoyed the most, I read on my own. It was Pudd'nhead Wilson.

I just read To Kill a Mocking Bird for school and I liked it. It wasnt the best book I have ever read, but it was solid.

We are also reading four or five of the other books you mentioned. I guess that the curriculum this year requires for a lot of classics.
