You need to minimize the number of programs running at the time.
In the majority of cases, the only programs that really need to be running at all times are your Antivirus, Firewall, and software for your Networking (wireless or wired connection). All the rest should not be running unless you did use them at some point and of course close them out when you were done.
Both my laptops and a 3 of desktops I use shut down in less than 20 sec each.

If you're running XP, all you need to do is press the windows key on your keyboard, arrow up to shutdown button and press enter twice. Then you can leave the room and it shuts itself down.

I am not very knowledgebeable in these things, but perhaps it would make sense to clear up the disk? To speed up all the processes in your PC. You know, like with "Ad-Aware Se Professional". Or something else. While we surfe and download, I suspect we get some rubbishy mini-files or something like it.

Who cares how long it takes to close down ?
If it's a laptop, just close the lid.
If it's a desktop, leave it on until you are finished for the day (or just leave it on all the time).

U cant really control how fast ur computer is. same thing happens to my computer: i just walk away from the room and when i get back 5 min, its off. maybe when u turn off ur computer, just leave and it'll turn off sooner or l8er.

Semtex does it for me, a bit pricey at the end of the day though.
