Persuasive Research Paper ideas?

Question

For my effective writing class I have to write a 9-12 page ( long I know!) persuasive paper. Well it's not due for 9 weeks thankfully but I need to decide on a topic. We are not allowed to use highly controversial topics such as "legalization of marijuana" or "abortion" and it can't be too broad of a subject such as "depression" so I am having a hard time deciding what I can write about. All suggestions welcome!

It's a persuasive paper, so you're going to have to write an argument. I would suggest doing something that you went over in class. Start out your paper with, "I think that...." and choose something from there.

As far as specific ideas go, I would say that you could make an argument like, "I think that people should not be allowed to smoke in restaurants", or "I think the drinking age should be lowered."

Farm Subsidies, (money given to certain farmers to grow crops) and how it actually only benefits those who are rich, and leaves the 'real' mom and dad farms broke. (Just got finished writing an argumentative paper on this) If you're interested, look into New Zealand and what happened when the farmers wanted subsidies cut, how subsidies began (during the Great Depression when farmers were going broke) etc. Good luck.

Not sure what would be classified as "highly controversial" and what wouldn't, but you could do it on something political... like the War in Iraq, or Democracy, or US Foreign Policy.

You could also choose something like showing how teachers are underpaid and underappreciated (sure to get bonus points there too!)
