Yes, hands down.
And even stuff after Black is awesome, albeit not as good as older stuff.
I have yet to hear a song by them I don't like, including Mama Said. Different, but still poignant.
And after seeing them live 6 times, I can honestly say I don't know of anyone better ;)

Not even close. Ever since Cliff B. died Metallica has sounded more and more like generic metal. Each album progressively worse. Early Metallica was good, but even then it wasn't the best ever.

You're losing totally perspective in your question. There has been lots of bands depending the era that have been even better than Metallica.
Now that you're so fanatic about them, go to this link www.lovegodsway.org and ask this guy Donnie Davies who says via a list that Metallica is a gay band.

metallica (before the 90s) is an excellent band and I truly love a lot of their music. Megadeth's got em beat, though.

nicely... in case you watch the BryanStarzzz interviews on YouTube you will discover (or a minimum of i did) that Andy Biersack is genuinely quite humorous and witty on the comparable time :/ i do no longer understand in case you will think of he's humorous yet I quite do :3
