When I was growing up whitle my parents were trying to get fiancially settled my father's mom from and many of my mom's family members all lived with us under one roof. My father's mother did not liek my mom and her family because she felt like they were teaching me to not be feminie by letting me play outside with my brothers and letting me play soccer while I was little and letting me whilste. And she told me that "boys don't like girls who are smart" My mom and her never got alone because my mom was Creole and my grandma was mad at my dad for picking a non-jamacian or a non-domincan wife.My grandma was born and raised in the Carribbean during the late 1930s and 1940s and whistling was considered taboo there and girls were suppose to stay and the house and help her mother with the chores. My mom and dad also wanted me to play and let the world be my oyster and they were always proud of my intelligence.Has anyone grown up like this?

When I was a kid at home and my sister or mother would whistle, my dad would quote some silly old Irish(?) proverb that went, "Whistling girls and cackling hens; both shall come to no-good ends." But based on his tone of voice, I'm 99.9% sure he was kidding.
Oh, and he's just as proud of my sister as he is of me.
(Both of us are college profs.)

Yeah it's pretty sleazy for anyone to do that. Just Mind the places you are walking because mostly it will be in the street or near some pub where they can get away with it. It's our stupid culture which treats females like this and sexualises young females and treats older women as crap. Old men don't even care how old you are if you are hot to them and think anyone whose 18 is game. Being a female is hard because guys aren't bothered by them being your grandpas age.

oh boy!!
doesnt really sould like my home but I totally get you.
caribbean parents are like that , its just the way they were raised.

my mom is not allowed to wear pants and my dad has a problem with me wearing them. He also treats me better than her, I dont think they really love each other anymore.

what makes it worse is that my mom is christian, so I think she feels barred into this marriage. Anyway,

yes alot of caribean families ( especially hispanic families) have pretty strong gender roles. They want their women to be ladies and thier men to be masculine.

your grandma doesnt get it, and sometimes elderly people cant handle how the world changes from what they know and believe. I'm glad your mom and dad support you, because some girls never get that.

Just be nice to grandma, work hard in school and at play!
=D

Whistle away little Darlin! Life is to be enjoyed. Whistle, hum, sing. It's GREAT to be alive, don't be afraid to show it. Your parents were right. Your Grandma undoubtedly grew up in a more restrictive and repressive time and culture when women were not allowed to express themselves. That's too bad, it's sad for her. Don't let the prejudices that she was raised with have a negative impact on your life. You owe it to yourself, and your offspring, to be all you can be.

I wan't raised like that. I was raised on the principle that girls should be treated equally to boys. What ever a boy can do what's stopping a girl from doing that too? Maybe your grandmother was raised on girls be the ones who always stand behind and sew and cook and do everything the world thinks is a "girls job" But that doesn't mean you have to be like her.

I was born and raised in the French West Indies and I was taught not to whistle as well. I think whistling is strongly linked to superstition (kids were not supposed to whistle at night either).

uh no, and they need to get over themselves. a girl should never have to dumb herself down for a guy, since there are so many stupid men out there. you have to learn to earn your own way. not to depend on a man, not to let one take all your money either.
