I have just purchased a Maxtor external hard drive. In the set up instructions it say to format the drive by launching the Apple Disk Utility. This utility is not on the drive or on a cd. I can save files to the drive ok. Do I really need to format it ??

I Just added a 250 GB External to my iBook and I would highly recommend that you format it using the MAC OS Journaled format. This will give you the fastest access to search the data you put there.

I will give you step by step instructions on how to properly do this.

One. Can you see the new hard drive, if so we are good.

From the finder, select go and select utilities, then select Disk Utility. Older OSX Go, Applications, Utilities folder, Disk Utility.

Okay.
After it scans attached drives, select your new hard drive

Okay.
Hit the Erase Tab and open the dialouge.

Select from the Format Pull Down list
Mac OS Journaled

Name your new hard drive

Hit Okay.

It takes about 2-5 minutes and walla

You have a Mac Formatted Hard Disk

After you move alot of stuff onto your new hard drive, spotlight will go into it and index all your files. Mine automatically set itself to search all drives for files and I was amazed at how fast i can find anything on either drive.

To locate the Apple Disk Utility: Goto: Applications:Utilities:Disk Ulilities. I too also have a Maxtor external hard drive and if you see it load on your desktop you should be fine. You can format it if you need to use a particular type of file system, i.e. Unix. One last thing I would do is try to open one of the files on the external drive to be sure it's working.

It's in the applications/utilities folder. You can format it FAT32 if you want, and PCs will be able to use it too.
