My fav is M104, also known as the Sombrero Galaxy. Made famous by its pictures, this galaxy is reasonably hard to see in the most common amateur telescopes. But its photos are glorious indeed: rich in dust lanes seen almost edge on, a brilliant stellar halo surrounds the galaxy. Looking carefully, individual globular clusters can be seen, and the lower left quadrant of pictures of the galaxy show a remarkable number of small galaxies in the background.

Stunning is the most fitting word.

Orion's belt does not have a galaxy - but it has the Horsehead nebula, and Orion's sword has a big old nebula called M42.

The coolest galaxy has to be Andromeda. At 2 million light years away it still covers an area in the sky equal to at least the diameter of 2 full moons. It is so big it does not fit into most telescope eyepieces. If you look carefully, you can spot it's two sister galaxies.

Andromeda looks a lot like our galaxy. So if you ever imagined what our galaxy would look like from 2 million light years away, look at Andromeda.

The Andromeda galaxy. The fact that it is hurtling through space toward the Milky Way and that in 250 to 500 million or billion (I can't remember) years they will collide and combine to form a giant irregularly shaped galaxy. I wish for the impossible. That I could be around when this happens.

Favorite galaxy?! The one we live in, the Milky Way. All the rest are distant relatives, far more distant than humans are from earthworms.

I'm amazed at all these esoteric responses.

I say this one! The Milky Way.

'Galaxy' comes from an ancient word meaning milk by the way...
