There are so many restrictions on behavior and business now that most people seem to take it for granted.

Government gets away with it because it is for the "greater good" or for "the children."

That's why the government can tell you who you can hire or fire for your business. That's why they can keep more of your money if you don't spend it on what they deem appropriate. (They call these "tax credits"). That's why they can brand you a lawbreaker for choosing not to wear a seatbelt.

Robbing is a tax-free activity. If they could find a way to tax muggings, it might be legalized.

Government is certainly a necessary evil, but it is evil nonetheless. If someone approaches you on the street brandishing a weapon and demands your valuables, you are within your legal and moral right to shoot him on the spot.

When the United States were founded, it was considered of the utmost importance that government be given the same consideration as the aforementioned robber. Complacency has become very deep-rooted in the last 200 years.

In short, government can only take that which the governed agree to cede.
