Rearrange the equation so that it equals Q

3Q-Q = 4 + 6
2Q = 4 + 6
Q = (4 + 6)/2
Q = 5

2007-02-02 08:17:37 · answer #1 · answered by ??????????? 2 · 0 0

Q + 4 = 3Q - 6

To solve this, move everything with a Q in it to the left hand side, and move everything else to the right hand side. Note that the sign of the term changes upon switching sides; 3Q, for instance, will become -3Q, and +4 will become -4. Therefore, we get

Q - 3Q = -4 - 6

Now, group like terms. Q - 3Q is equal to -2Q, and -4 - 6 is equal to -10.

-2Q = -10

Now, to isolate the Q, divide both sides by (-2). This will leave you with just Q on the left hand side.

Q = (-10) / (-2)

-10 divided by -2 is equal to 5, so

Q = 5

Q+4=3Q-6

Add 6 to both sides:
Q+4+6= 3Q-6+6
Q+10=3Q

Then subtract Q from both sides:
Q+10-Q =3Q-Q
10=2Q

Now divide both sides by 2:
10/2 =2Q/2
5=Q

Done.

get all the Q's on one side and all the numbers on the other

Q + 4 = 3Q - 6
first subtract Q from both sides to get
Q - Q + 4 = 3Q - Q - 6
which is
4 = 2Q - 6
than add 6 to both sides
4 + 6 = 2Q - 6 + 6
to get
10 = 2Q
and finally divide both sides by 2
10/2 = 2Q/2

to get the answer
Q = 5

This is basic algebra...

Step 1:

Move 3Q to the left...

Q+4 - 3Q = 3Q-6 - 3Q
-2Q+4 = -6

Step 2:

Move the 4 to the right...

-2Q+4 - 4 = -6 - 4
-2Q = -10

Step 3:

solve for Q by dividing by -2...

-2Q/-2 = -10/-2
Q = 5

Voila!

Hope this helps! :)
