I want to buy a dvd recorder from ebay but need some info on what a dvd recorder is.

I want to tape all my fav programs but how do I do that? Do i just buy blank disks and tape it it with the dvd recorder?

Can I still play normal DVDs on my recorder?

A dvd recorder works pretty much like a VCR. You record on recordable DVD's instead of tape. There is more than one type of recordable DVD's so you need to make sure you buy the right ones. DVD recorders can playback normal DVD's also.

ps ... if I were you I wouldn't buy it sight unseen and I'd only buy name brand. My first DVD recorder was an unknown brand and didn't last much over one year. I now have a toshiba and it works great.

First of all I wouldn't buy electronics from ebay, you don't know what you are getting. Ebay is great for somethings, but not electronics or computers. People may say they are in great shape, but you get it and it works for two days, what do you do then.
If you don't want to spend a lot of money go to Overstock.com, you can get a reconditioned machine, and it will be real cheap and it will come with a warranty. I believe it's for 2 years. Be safe and smart. What you need is not just a plain DVD machine, but you need one that records. These of course will be more expensive as they have the extra ability included. Simply attach the DVD to your TV, like you would a regular DVD or a Video deck and you are ready to go. you set the DVD up, clock, any preset stations, etc, it's just a regular DVD but it tapes. Then go out and get writable DVD's. Check with the instructions of the machine if it takes DVD- or DVD+, this is very important. You can also get re-writable DVD's, these are a lot more money, but if you are going to tape things you aren't going to keep, and are going to write over they are worth it in the long run. The plain ones are good for movies that you want to keep.
And of course you can still play regular DVD's on it,it's just a regular DVD.

yes you can record your tapes onto disc, you will have to " wire " up the vcr to the dvdr to do so.

The recording format ( ask seller ) will determine what type of disc you will have to use . Either - or + format.

just to help you out the - format will record any widescreen film, but needs to be finialst after recording

+ format will record anything in the 4:3 aspect, and needs to be format before use.

Just now to confuse you there are two types of - and +, r and rw
r can be used to record ONCE, it cannot be over written, therefore idea for favorite film, family stuff.

RW is rewrittable, so once you have watched the programme, you can overwrite it.

You can play any DVD brought or hired on any dvd recorder.

Hope this " over load " of info is important.

PS ask seller what region the dvdr is ( it has to region 2 ) for any of your dvd to work on

good luck on bidding

you need a hdd dvd hard drive recorder ,and yes buy blank dvds to record shows/films on to and yes it play normal dvds.
one thing to look out for is if it says dvd- or dvd+ if it has both you can buy any dvd r if its a dvd player +r you can only record on dvd+R discs DVD+RW means you can wipe what is on them and re-record like a video tape.
If you want you could email me the ebay link and i can help you out .
