Thank God for technology! Go to the library or bookstore and purchase yourself some videos (DVD/CD/TAPES). Also, there are plenty of books available to help you understand basic English. Additionally, there are many high schools who have 'community school's within (classes are usually held in the evening) whereby you can get help. Smaller classes and hands on instruction is always the best way, but you can carry your own little book and tapes as you go about your business and listen to words and phrases and sounds. Also, go to the movies!!! You will definitely get a variety of language sources - particulary where American culture is concerned. Keep in mind - every culture here in America has their own sub-clutures and within those are groups who have their own slangs, idioms, colloquialisms, etc. Good luck.

Spend as much time as you can speaking English with well educated English people. Also get some good English tapes/cds and listen to them alot! Learning English is a slow and very long business so be patient. Good Luck!.

Movies and music helped me tons!!!! They just get you exposed to everyday usage and expressions; very useful. Also, you could find yourself a pen-pal (yes, I know it sounds lame/stupid/etc., but it doesn't have to be if you find someone interesting to talk to). I'm up for it if you'd be interested, or...

It's all about practice. Good luck!!!!

******EDIT: If it's vocabulary you're interested in, lots of reading is the best advice any professor can give you. Read everything you can get your hands on!

One of my Spanish teachers, a native Spanish speaker, told me that watching soap operas with subtitles helped her to learn English very quickly.

Well, you have looked around your town for english speaking tourists haven't you? if not, be polite and approach them and tell them you are learning english and would they be happy to talk to you. you could even offer to act as a guide for them. there may even be local services where you can get paid to do that.

another way to do it is go on holiday to an english speaking country.
