With Mirena, I've not had any problems but my mom is making me a lil paranoid about not having a cycle. She says, "A woman's body has to be cleaned out monthly through your menstrual cycle or else you are going to be ill later in life." I've spoken to my doctor about it and he says that isn't true however, at the same time, I can never really get him to explain where that blood is going every month since it DEFINATELY isn't coming out of me. . . .

Anyone know the answer??? And come on guys, no funny business. . . . .

Here are the facts -

The fact info for the product states that 20% of women on this form of birth control have NO period after a year. It isn't just an IUD - there are small bits of hormones released into your body, so the product not only keeps fertilized eggs from implanting, but also keeps the uterine lining from forming. No uterine lining = no period. So there is no blood to release

You doctor knows what is going on. As far as not having periods not being "healthy", think of it this way. For years, women spent the majority of their life pregnant, and not having periods. So today's modern woman, having less children, has more periods. This shouldn't make you ill later in life, as you are mimicing nature.

The blood isn't going anywhere because your body isn't building up the tissue inside your uterus to expel every month. You're not cycling because the hormones in the IUD (Mirena is infused with progesterone) are constantly preventing you from ovulating, so your body isn't preparing to become pregnant. No ovulation, no period. It's that simple.

For the record, women who use hormonal birth control and who ovulate less often are less likely to get uterine and ovarian cancers...which is healthier in my book!

Mom doesn't know everything.

I have the Mirena too.

The reason you may eventually have a shorter period, or one with little or no menstrual flow, is because of the thinning of your uterine lining.

So that means if your lining isn't building up it doesn't need shed.

the blood isnt going anywhere! a period is when your inner lining of your uterus comes out in a period form. cleaning out your body. the reason for this is that when we ovulate we release an egg that must be fertelized to have a baby and if it not fertelized then the lining sheads and prepairs for the next egg release. is you are not releasing an egg "ovulating" becuase of your IUD there would be no need for a period. though you mom is a little right it's not natural to not have a period doesnt mean that your ever gonna die from it. good luck
