occasionally my laptop keeps dropping internet connection. i have telewest cable broadband. also when it happens my laptop won't detect any new usb connections (like if i put in a memory stick) and it wont shut down without shutting off the power. it works fine after reboot for a while then does it again. i have even re-fromatted the hard drive and re-installed windows and it hasnt solved the problem. any suggestions? is it likely to be a software / isp / hardware problem? seems to happen usually when downloading large files but not as often when doing normal surfing.

Windows 8 or 8.1 has an incurable fault and that is losing the WiFi connection periodically. There's nothing you can do to fix it - you can add drivers - you can make the connection automatic - you can do all sorts of stuff and the problem will persist - - - let's hope Windows 10 has the answer.
